A Vision for Cades Cove
Nestled in Great Smoky Mountains National Park is Cades Cove. Home to abundant wildlife and rare plants, the Cove provides a unique blend of history, pioneer culture and natural scenic beauty that captures the hearts of millions of visitors every year. Preserving the diverse mix of scenic, cultural, natural and recreational values presents many management challenges. A study is underway to assist the Park in developing a long-range management vision for Cades Cove that will enhance the quality of the visitor experience through protecting natural resources, preserving cultural heritage and managing traffic congestion.

Phase II of planning will build on the five existing candidate alternatives from Phase I. During this second phase we will refine and further detail these alternatives and assess them based on their potential environmental impacts. In addition to what might be considered more traditional environmental studies, the alternatives will also be examined based upon the Visitor Experience and Resource Protection (VERP) framework. VERP will provide useful information on the quality of the visitor experience for each alternative and how natural and cultural resource conditions might be affected by visitor use. Information gained through the VERP process will be used in evaluating alternatives and comparing potential impacts.
